Legal Counsel

Job Overview: As a Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance on a wide range of matters related to our operations in Japan. This role requires a Japanese qualified lawyer (Bengoshi) with a strong understanding of Japanese law, particularly in contract drafting, negotiation, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working independently, managing complex legal issues, and collaborating effectively with internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate various legal agreements and contracts, including but not limited to commercial contracts, employment agreements, vendor contracts, and lease agreements.
  • Provide legal advice and support to internal teams on matters related to corporate governance, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to assess risks, identify legal issues, and provide recommendations to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Manage and resolve legal disputes and litigation matters, including coordinating with external counsel and representing the company in negotiations and settlements.
  • Develop and implement legal policies, procedures, and training programs to promote legal compliance and enhance risk management across the organization.
  • Stay updated on changes in Japanese laws, regulations, and industry trends relevant to the company’s business operations and provide timely updates and guidance to relevant stakeholders.


  • Japanese qualified lawyer (Bengoshi) with a minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience in a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Strong expertise in contract drafting, negotiation, and review, with a demonstrated ability to independently handle complex commercial transactions.
  • Excellent understanding of Japanese civil and commercial law, including corporate law, contract law, labor law, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Japanese and English, with proficiency in legal writing and communication in both languages.
