Owners Engineer – BESS

Taylor Hopkinson is currently in active pursuit Owner’s Engineer (OE) Consultant specializing in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the utility scale with a powerhouse in energy storage and renewables, bringing unmatched, real-world expertise from designing and operating. They’ve empowered utilities, developers, and investors with cutting-edge strategy, financial insight, and system optimization across nearly 1GW of transformative clean energy projects. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in energy storage design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) oversight, with proven success in managing complex BESS projects from concept through commissioning. This consultant will serve as a trusted technical advisor and owner’s representative, ensuring project performance, safety, and commercial viability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Owner’s Engineer for utility-scale BESS projects, overseeing technical execution from development to COD.
  • Review and comment on EPC design packages, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Evaluate BESS technology options, including inverter/battery selection, thermal management, and controls integration.
  • Provide technical due diligence on vendor packages and construction methodologies.
  • Support permitting, interconnection, and grid compliance processes.
  • Monitor construction progress, quality control, and schedule adherence on behalf of the client.
  • Coordinate with EPC contractors, utilities, consultants, and internal teams to resolve field and design issues.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, electrical codes, and applicable standards (IEEE, NFPA, NEC, UL).
  • Lead or support commissioning, performance testing, and handover processes.
  • Assist in CAPEX/OPEX modeling and risk analysis related to BESS systems.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering (or related).
  • 10-15 years of experience in power engineering with 5+ years specifically in BESS.
  • Demonstrated experience acting as OE or in a similar consulting capacity on utility-scale storage projects (≥50 MW).
  • Deep understanding of energy storage technologies, control systems, and grid interconnection.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Familiarity with EPC environments, contract structures, and project delivery models.
  • PE license or advanced certifications in energy storage, power systems, or project management are a plus.
  • Ideally based in Austin, TX or willing to travel frequently to client sites.
