The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in energy storage design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) oversight, with proven success in managing complex BESS projects from concept through commissioning. This consultant will serve as a trusted technical advisor and owner’s representative, ensuring project performance, safety, and commercial viability.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Owner’s Engineer for utility-scale BESS projects, overseeing technical execution from development to COD.
- Review and comment on EPC design packages, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Evaluate BESS technology options, including inverter/battery selection, thermal management, and controls integration.
- Provide technical due diligence on vendor packages and construction methodologies.
- Support permitting, interconnection, and grid compliance processes.
- Monitor construction progress, quality control, and schedule adherence on behalf of the client.
- Coordinate with EPC contractors, utilities, consultants, and internal teams to resolve field and design issues.
- Ensure compliance with safety, electrical codes, and applicable standards (IEEE, NFPA, NEC, UL).
- Lead or support commissioning, performance testing, and handover processes.
- Assist in CAPEX/OPEX modeling and risk analysis related to BESS systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering (or related).
- 10-15 years of experience in power engineering with 5+ years specifically in BESS.
- Demonstrated experience acting as OE or in a similar consulting capacity on utility-scale storage projects (≥50 MW).
- Deep understanding of energy storage technologies, control systems, and grid interconnection.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Familiarity with EPC environments, contract structures, and project delivery models.
- PE license or advanced certifications in energy storage, power systems, or project management are a plus.
- Ideally based in Austin, TX or willing to travel frequently to client sites.
