Spotlight on: US solar

#AllaboutRenewables

In recent weeks, we’ve welcomed some extremely positive announcements from the US that signal exciting times ahead for the US renewable energy sector, including a green light for the country’s first large-scale commercial offshore wind farm.  A new dawn indeed for the offshore wind sector. But the already established solar market is also set for significant growth.

According to a recent report from Wood MacKenzie and SEIA, the US solar industry grew by 43% in 2020, installing a record 19GW of capacity, reinforcing its position as America’s leading source of clean energy. Forecasts also predict the US is on track to reach a total of 419GW capacity over the next decade.

In addition, the US Department of Energy (DoE) is set to invest $128m to reduce costs and speed up the deployment of solar energy technologies to support the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate goals.

This commitment to investment and growth has a significant impact on jobs in the market.

The solar industry accounted for 3.8 million jobs in 2019 – a third of the global renewables workforce, with the US making up 6.5% of that share. IRENA estimates that employment in the solar industry could exceed 11.7 million jobs in 2030 and 18.7 million in 2050.

In line with this growth, our dedicated Solar team is seeing a substantial increase in demand for US-based solar roles and we only expect that to continue as market investment aligns with the US Government’s NetZero targets.

Our Senior Consultant, Lewis Wright specialises in the US solar market, placing experts into a range of positions throughout the entire project life cycle, from development to construction and operation, across finance, legal and sales.

He said,

“In 2020, more than 30% of our entire Solar & Storage business came from the US, and that is increasing month-on-month.

We are partnering with a growing number of clients in that region to support their expansion plans. For example, at the moment I am working with a leading US renewable energy asset management and services company to support in the scaling up of its Finance & Accounting division. We will deliver five specialists, from Associate through to Director level, and these strategic placements will be a key driver of future success for our client.

This is typical of what we are seeing just now.  Finding the right talent to fill the often hard-to-fill roles requires direct access to a dedicated network of candidates, and that’s why our clients partner with us, to draw upon our specific track record and expertise in this market.”
