SPR adding solar PV to Wind Farms in UK and Ireland

ScottishPower Renewables, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, plans to construct solar projects across their onshore wind sites throughout the UK and Ireland. Adding solar PV and battery storage seeks to maximise the generation potential for every renewables project the company develops.

SPR aims to use more than one technology for future projects, representing over 1GW of capacity.

At COP25, CEO Keith Anderson announced…

“Every green megawatt of electricity will be crucial if we stand any chance of hitting Net Zero in 2050, so innovation from energy companies is more important than ever… This means squeezing the absolute maximum potential out of every clean energy project that we consider.”

Planning applications have already been made to install solar on existing wind farms in England and applications of being prepared for Scotland and Ireland, as well as future projects.

Anderson anticipates that such hybrid plants will become the new normal within 18 months.
