Solar PV General Manager – Spain

On behalf of our client, a leading global investment manager, Taylor Hopkinson are recruiting for a General Manager in Spain to focus on large scale Solar PV project development of a 1.5GW portfolio. The role will be based in Madrid requiring occasionally travel to London.

The role of General Manager will encompass a broad range of activities, interacting internally and externally with people from a variety of professional backgrounds. The General Manager will also be able to have a proactive role in key strategic decisions. The role will work closely with the Origination & Execution team, Fund Manager, Asset Managers, Portfolio Manager among other. 

Main Responsibilities 

Development and Commercial Activities

  • Lead the origination of PPAs, defining options, establishing and present an implementation plan; lead the commercial negotiations and securing PPAs for each project
  • Support the developer in key commercial negotiations throughout the development of the portfolio
  • Manage relationships with authorities, grid operators, regulators, market operators and other relevant stakeholders
  • Lead the EPC and O&M negotiation for the portfolio as the projects mature and reach ‘ready to build’ in close coordination with the O&E team
  • Oversee of the developer’s activities

Asset Management and Financial Activities

  • Prepare regular asset management reports, providing update to the O&E team on the progress of the portfolio
  • Identifies and reports red-flags, escalating major issues
  • Assist the portfolio management team providing cash flow forecasts and ad-hoc analysis as required in the context of reporting to the investors
  • Monitor and manager milestone payments including verification / technical due diligence
  • Prepare and update financial models for the projects and for the portfolio
  • Oversee the SPV management subcontractor (responsible for the accounting, tax and compliance obligations)
  • Lead the relationship with the lending market local and international in collaboration with the O&E team
  • Assist in managing and reviewing bespoke development due diligence—largely technical and legal in nature

Strategic Analysis

  • Ongoing review of the investment environment, identifying risks and opportunities to create value to Giralda platform including secondary market, regulatory environment and funding market
  • Regular updates of the key market insights, opportunities for cost savings / value creation
  • Assess opportunities to sell-down or exit; assists the O&E team on the exit process

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the electricity market in Iberia, including but not limited to interaction with grid operators (REE and distribution companies), knowledge of the Spanish regulation and development roadmaps
  • Experience in securing sizeable corporate PPAs and well connected amongst offtakers
  • Experience liaising with renewable energy related permitting authorities (central government and regional ones) and track record of delivering projects
  • Knowledge of the banking market and experience in closing project finance debt
  • Technical knowledge on solar PV including development, construction and operation
  • Strong financial and analytical skills; proficient in Excel and working with detailed Excel project finance models; ability to run financial models (not required to build models from scratch)
  • Good project management skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Confident in preparing management reports, succinctly presenting these to internal committees and being able to deliver these to tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated commercial experience in handling complex negotiations
  • Capability to work autonomously and in doing so still be able to maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, remain committed, have the resilience to deal with and solve problems, and to maintain the motivation to initiate and deliver maximum value shovel-ready projects
  • Strong ethical approach to work and relationships; a desire to work in an organisation that prides itself in operating to the highest standards of business conduct
  • Skill in managing a wide range of stakeholders and different management teams
  • Willingness to grow and manage a team
  • Willingness to travel as required throughout Spain and to London
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Educated to a degree level or above
