Reporting to the Senior Design Manager, the Electrical Design Manager will lead the electrical engineering matters and related executions which are associated with the development phase of a new UK offshore wind farm. The Electrical Design Manager shall ensure that inputs are provided and engineering work is delivered as required from development through FID.

The Electrical Design Manager is responsible for ensuring the electrical design from the turbines up to the grid connection point, including among others, inter-array/export cables, on/offshore substations, onshore connection and appropriated communication, protection and control systems which will need to be implemented in the project. This person will ensure that the projects are appropriately engaged with key external stakeholders such as the supply chain and regulatory bodies associated with grid connections/transmission asset development.

The Electrical Design Manager will also be responsible for securing and managing the grid connection and providing support to the procurement team with detailed scopes of work for procurement activities. All this with the aim to develop a reliable technical solution, optimising LCoE and keeping high-quality while minimising health, safety and environmental risk.


  • Overall accountability for the delivery of the electrical work packages associated with the development of an offshore wind project including: grid connection code and agreements; onshore substation; onshore and offshore export cables; offshore substations; inter array cables and high voltage commissioning, being responsible for the optimal design to ensure that the wind farms have the maximum reliability, quality and safety.
  • Responsible for managing the design / engineering of the offshore substation topsides and cables, as well as providing key technical inputs to the transport, installation and construction activities.
  • Responsible for the preparation, elaboration and provision of all the specifications and technical documentation to allow the project engagement and to engage with the suppliers, with the intention of guaranteeing the correct application, bidding, construction and operation, ensuring that the determining factors established by the Permitting, Environmental and other Local requirements are met.
  • Responsible for supervising the preparation of RFPs, assessing offers and monitoring contractors for Engineering studies, ensuring the correct functionality of the project as an overall system;
  • Ensuring that electrical activities are in accordance with applicable standards (e.g. the Grid Code, SQSS, RFG ), legislation, ethics, and good practices across the offshore wind farms industry, tender requirements, regulatory aspects and project policies.
  • Provides technical support to other areas of the technical department including aspects that matter to installation and HSE and other departments as necessary.
  • Providing inputs to CAPEX economic modelling on Cables, On/Offshore Substations, grid connection.
  • Responsible for the delivery of schedule and quality objectives.
  • Translating engineering issues into CAPEX and OPEX (providing inputs to O&M Department)
  • Working with project controls, develop and assess engineering and programme scenarios for the project.
  • Working with the commercial area, support the development of construction and operational cost estimates for projects.
  • Monitor offshore wind technology development and ensure that this is considered in the development of projects, including identifying optimization and cost reduction opportunities.
  • Ensure that lessons learned are properly documented throughout the life of the project
  • Support technical due diligence processes.
  • Identifying, assessing and ensuring implementation of a risk mitigation plan to determine mitigation actions & close out of risks.
  • Contribute to the development of synergies between the different offshore wind projects in collaboration with the company's corporate areas
  • Be responsible for objectives, resources and budget across the electrical function.
  • Where required, support the company's work in monitoring and engaging in regulatory matters associated with the development and construction of offshore wind farm projects.
  • Ensure interfaces with other packages such as: Structural Department for Offshore Substation Design (Topside and substructure structural design)


  • At least 5 years' experience in offshore wind farm cables and substations project engineering
  • Demonstrable experience within the power / energy sector with experience of working on electrical systems between 33kV and 400kV is essential. Direct experience in undertaking or managing electrical system design of offshore wind farms and/or transmission assets is essential.
  • Relevant experience in the design, installation and commissioning of HV and EHV systems is required.
  • Degree qualified in Electrical engineering or equivalent. Additional business education/practice is highly desirable.
  • The project has an international team of employees, and the working language is English. Candidates need to be fluent in English both spoken and written. Proficiency in other languages will be valued.
  • Knowledge of electrical system design/study/analysis processes and techniques is essential.
  • Direct experience of subsea cable design, manufacture and installation is essential.
  • Specific knowledge of the UK standards associated with electrical system design of grid connected power projects is required, including knowledge of key aspects of the country regulatory regime such as the Grid Code is required.
  • Specific knowledge of the design, construction and commissioning of electrical transmission assets is desirable.
  • Specific knowledge of electrical and Scada aspects of wind turbine technology is desirable.
  • Proactive approach to optimizations and improvements.
  • A pro-active approach to project and contract management in order to identify risks and opportunities early and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment, in a consortium or joint venture.
  • Strong autonomy, leadership and influence qualities, with the ability to work in networks
  • Proven experience within a group support function within international environment.
  • Project management and engineering skills in large projects, both development and construction.
  • Aptitude to problem solving.
  • Results oriented with strong ability to deliver on plans.

  • The role is based in Edinburgh but travelling to supplier's facilities and offices, local ports and sites may be required.
