Offshore Wind

Taylor Hopkinson is supporting a leading offshore wind developer to appoint an experienced ornithologist on a permanent basis to play a key role in the development of their offshore wind portfolio.

The role will lead the developer's activities and specialist engagement in all ornithology matters across a portfolio of projects, working closely with project development teams across all project phases.

This is a full-time staff role base in Edinburgh.


  • Provide leadership and advice to the development team related to all ornithology activities.
  • Maintain and build important relationships with regulators and statutory / non-statutory stakeholders with respect to ornithology. This will include strategic engagement in relation to the Strategic Marine Plan for Offshore Wind (SMP) and the planned iterative plan review cycles.
  • Take a leading role in ensuring the development of offshore wind projects in an environment where ornithological constraints offer greater cumulative challenges.
  • Lead on procurement of ornithology work alongside the commercial team and management of contracts placed including budgets, programme and risks.
  • Provide advice to projects on the derogation process and lead on activities required to agree compensatory measures with regulators and statutory stakeholders.
  • Provide ornithological advice across the wider offshore wind portfolio in the UK and internationally.
  • Provide ornithological advice to the UK business development team in search of opportunities for projects in the UK and Ireland.
  • Support site selection and stakeholder engagement.
  • In addition to ornithology, provide wider ecological advice to the project portfolio where relevant experience exists e.g. marine mammals, fish ecology and benthic ecology.
  • Work with the Fishery Manager on matters of shared interest due to the close interface between ornithology and commercial fisheries.
  • Represent the developer on various regional and national forums such as ORJIP and ScotMER.
  • Collaborate with other geographies in the portfolio on research /mitigation opportunities of relevance.
  • Maintain a network internal key contacts to ensure company wide knowledge share.
  • Remain at the forefront of ongoing ecological research in a rapidly changing landscape, ensuring knowledge share on key issues with the UK development team.


  • Degree or relevant equivalent in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences or related subject.
  • Demonstrable experience working within a professional company (such as utility, consultancy, Government Agency or NGO) with direct experience within the renewables industry and / or the planning and consenting process, or substantial academic research experience (Research Scientist, PhD, Post-Doctoral experience).
  • An enthusiastic, committed and self-motivated worker with long term ambitions in the renewable sector.
  • Demonstrable experience in marine ornithology dealing with matters both project specific and strategic in nature.
  • Experience managing consultants / contractors working to programme and budget.
  • A respected individual with existing network of contacts both government and academic.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving including complex issues and interface with wider project.
  • Influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Organised and efficient with an ability to multitask and work to challenging deadlines.
  • High standard of report writing and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel when required to deliver tasks relating to stakeholder engagement, consenting/development related research and other relevant activities.
