Our client, a leading developer of long duration energy storage (LDES) projects and products, is looking for an experienced Permitting and Environmental Manager to lead the permitting, land and environmental workstreams for its innovative green hydrogen projects.

In 2021 this company successfully concluded a private equity funding round followed by an IPO, giving the client a strong platform to build on its success to date and set clear and achievable goals for future growth and development. The senior management team has put the client at the forefront of the development and operation of LDES projects and products. They have a deep knowledge of project origination, project development, and corporate and project finance. The team is actively developing two LDES projects in the Netherlands and Denmark, and has obtained exclusive rights to a portfolio of energy storage projects across the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.

This is a key role within the organisation and as your key responsibilities, you will:

  • Manage and lead all permitting, land and environmental workstreams (including EIA), ensuring effective project delivery to defined budgets and timeline. Prepare licence and permitting applications for LDES projects globally.
  • Identify, manage, mitigate and report on related risks
  • Oversee the procurement and management of surveys and studies and liaise with external stakeholders
  • Ensure permitting & land strategies are robust, prevent potential delays, evaluate and recommend alternative development routs, communicating them to the team and deploying them at the appropriate time
  • Liaise and coordinate with project delivery teams, partners, key external stakeholders and other supporting contractors, to support successful development of projects and promotion of project's consortia (as applicable)
  • Ensure permit application documents are efficiently prepared and submitted within project's milestone dates, and obtain permits in a timely manner, persuading relevant stakeholders
  • Interface with the Engineering team to provide necessary design & engineering outcomes to be included in permit applications in an accurate and timely manner
  • Manage scoping, tendering and contracting processes to engage required advisors such as local engineering companies, licences administrative agents related to land, environment and permitting processes
  • Manage permitting milestone schedules across the portfolio, including identification of critical path, allocation of tasks to relevant parties and optimisation of project schedules
  • Monitor government policies, laws & regulation changes and market trends related to Energy Storage project development, and apply key takeaways to project and business strategies
  • Establish public relations strategy and manage key participants including PR advisors, public affairs agencies, media, newspapers
  • In conjunction with Corporate Communications, manage civil complaints including assessing key issues, finding alternative solutions, negotiate the terms and reach agreements that are satisfactory to the permitting authorities
  • Prepare introduction, explanation and marketing materials to deliver public presentations to all related stakeholders on projects
  • Negotiate and agree the conditions of monetary compensation to stakeholders including landowners, community contribution, profit sharing
  • Prepare and update regularly, the stakeholder management plan for the region / territory including categorisation of stakeholders, key concerns, management strategy, key contact points, activities log
  • Ensuring the projects successfully secure all rights to build (consents, permits, grid connection, land rights and other 3rd party agreements etc.). Continuously ensure compliance with requirements and secure license to operate in projects
  • Collate market intelligence including competitive landscapes, market / national practices and trends, interfacing with market participants such as other developers, construction companies, equipment suppliers and specialist service providers
  • Oversee the effective development and implementation of contractor's HSE management plans
  • Support the development of further growth opportunities regionally and internationally
  • Report project progress, risks and relevant issues to Project Directors and wider internal stakeholders
