Control Engineer

Our client who stands as a global leader in the energy storage sector, offering a comprehensive suite of products and services alongside cutting-edge cloud-based software tailored specifically for renewables and storage solutions is looking for a Control Engineer to join their team.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Project team in implementing Project-specific requirements utilising existing functionalities such as Controls, Application modes, and Grid integration, along with all related systems and processes.
  • Drive the integration of the BESS control system into the Transmission System Operator (TSO) EMS systems, developing logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of the BESS to meet TSO requirements.
  • Collaborate with field engineers to troubleshoot and resolve issues encountered during commissioning/testing of systems, focusing on controls-related subjects.
  • Provide support for the engineering of utility-scale energy storage solutions, including the development, implementation, and testing of controls applications.
  • Develop standardised test procedures and conduct tests (FAT / SAT) to streamline commissioning time, and participate in hands-on lab testing during evaluations of prototype systems.
  • Interface with clients and subcontractors to ensure Controls compliance and concept alignment during Tender and Project Execution phases.
  • Maintain documentation of existing Controls infrastructure, including hardware, applications, protocols, communication links, and system backup and recovery strategies.
  • Stay updated on all Company products, developments, and projects relevant to the Controls network at both site and enterprise levels.
  • Enforce strict management of change control procedures and documentation.
  • Support company strategy and provide relevant reporting and updates to Company leadership as required.
  • Develop and recommend performance management and feedback mechanisms for current Controls technical support KPIs.
  • Be able to travel on a bi-weekly basis throughout EMEA.

Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s / master’s degree in computer / industrial engineering with a focus on automation and controls (or similar).
  • Min of 2 years of relevant controls/software/programming experience with a power utility or similar industry, including design, operation, and maintenance of power plants.
  • Extensive knowledge of the electricity transmission/distribution sector and EMS systems, including Grid code and requirements analysis, development, and testing of algorithms for Grid services applications.
  • Proficiency in SCADA protocols such as IEC60870-5-101/103/104, IEC 61850 MMS, DNP3, Modbus & TCP/IP, PLC, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), SEL Real Time Automation Controller (RTAC), SEL Relays & Meters, Siemens Relays & Meters & SCADA Gateways & Data Concentrators.
  • Experience with Linux-based systems and commands, as well as high-level programming languages like Python and shell/bash scripting, and familiarity with Github.
  • Solution-oriented mindset, excellent communication skills, fluency in English, and proficiency in German or other languages would be advantageous but not mandatory.

Nice to haves:

  • Familiarity with MathWorks Simulink for model-based systems engineering, and knowledge of C/C++.
  • Experience with the design, operation, and maintenance of high-voltage electrical equipment including inverters, transformers, I/O racks, telecommunications, and controllers.
