View of Hamburg

With record auctions this summer adding 7.8GW to the pipeline and capacity set to triple between 2026 and 2030, Germany’s offshore wind sector is set for unprecedented growth in the near future.

Germany currently has 8GW of installed offshore wind capacity and a 30GW target for the end of this decade. Experienced global players like RWE, Ørsted, EnBW, Vattenfall and Iberdrola are among the key developers tendering bids in the North and Baltic Seas, and a joint ventures by EDF and BayWa is in the pipeline.

This year’s auctions received a number of zero-subsidy bids, highlighting the economic attractiveness of the technology and the stunning cost reductions that have been made in the last decade. Through deployment and advances in technology, offshore wind has carved a path to cost-competitiveness and is now poised to be the backbone of the global energy transition, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs in the process.
