A leading renewable energy investment, fund and asset management company are seeking a Senior Business Development Manager. Our client invests into both renewable energy developers and projects across a range of renewable energy technologies including solar PV, wind, energy storage, waste-to-energy and energy efficiency.

Role Description

Are you someone with a detailed understanding of negotiating and concluding land and property agreements? The role will deliver full land assembly packages for renewable energy projects. You will also have experience in the origination of new greenfield projects. You will work with the team to ensure a constant pipeline of renewable energy projects capable of achieving specific project and financial objectives.

You should understand the political and reputational challenges to development. You will need to be commercially astute, a self-starter who is not afraid to instigate bringing projects forward to take them through the planning process.

Much of the work within the development team involves going out and meeting landowners, agents, local authorities and other stakeholders. You will need to be willing to work flexibly and regular travel will be required.

Key responsibilities

  • Taking responsibility for the origination and development of new sites and/or acquisitions, initially with a focus on onshore wind projects in Scotland, from site selection through to pre-construction.
  • Lead on land related matters relating to projects throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Manage the acquisition process and develop appropriate planning-led strategies for each project.
  • Maximise commercial viability of each development site and work to demonstrate value optimisation and deliverability against identified project risks.
  • Manage and report on all project risks and DEVEX.
  • Provide commercial input to consultancy contracts and landowner agreements, ensuring best value is achieved in all such negotiations.
  • Support in establishing community engagement models at the earliest opportunity for each project proposition and engage with project stakeholders across community councils, local authorities, MPs, MSPs, interest groups locally and the communities.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the project team as well as the extended development team.
  • Mentoring junior team members to help them make the step up and increase the ability of the team to deliver more and better-quality projects.
  • Keeping records of site progression and ensuring junior members of the team are progressing new sites in an efficient and timely manner.

Experience / Requirements

  • Significant previous experience within a commercial development role in the UK or Ireland
  • Proven land management and/or origination skills, particularly in renewable energy generation or infrastructure development
  • A good understanding of the energy sector, with particular emphasis on wind and battery storage technologies
  • Sound knowledge of planning, permitting and delivery of grid connections for onshore renewables projects
  • Proven people management skills - ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with diverse stakeholders including landowners, communities and planning authorities
  • Innovative and driven to make things happen without instruction
  • Hands-on approach and ability to work under pressure
  • Proven ability to work and communicate with remote colleagues
  • Computer literacy (MS Office) is essential and familiarity with cloud-based project management software would be useful
  • Full driver's license
